New villas provide individual choice for people with disability

Disability Services Minister Stephen Dawson has officially opened an accommodation facility that will set a new standard for people with complex disability support needs.

Bradford Views is a $12 million complex in Coolbinia built for the Ability Centre, and replaces the organisation’s Hillroyd Nursing Home.

The site’s four separate villas have been designed to enable residents to have a stronger connection to the community. They provide longer term accommodation for 20 residents, with additional support for people who are transitioning back to their home environment.

A key feature of the villas is the integrated technology which enables residents to individualise their environment, such as controlling the opening and closing of blinds and doors, and turning lights on and off from their personal computers and devices.

The facility also includes an art studio, an interactive garden design and a community centre, where residents and their families can socialise together.

Feedback from people who previously called Hillroyd home, and their families, was incorporated into the design of the new facility.

The Ability Centre provides services and support to more than 1,700 people with disability and their families, throughout Western Australia.
