Desert stories unveiled at new exhibition

Hundreds of artists and art-lovers from across the Pilbara will converge on Port Hedland’s West End this evening to celebrate the opening of Pujiman, a collaborative and unique exhibition developed by two of the region’s most prominent Aboriginal art centres.

The project brought together the last of the desert-born generation, known as pujiman, with younger emerging artists to develop a contemporary collection of art pieces that pay tribute to Aboriginal culture.

The multi-disciplinary exhibition features animation, film, photography, drawing and acrylic paintings, giving viewers a rare glimpse of life in the remote western desert of the Pilbara.

Pujiman is one of just two exhibitions in Western Australia selected by Art on the Move for a State-wide tour later this year.

The exhibition at the Port Hedland Courthouse Gallery runs until April 28, and will re-open on May 25 at the East Pilbara Arts Centre in Newman, before commencing a State-wide tour.

The project was a collaboration between Spinifex Hill Artists and Martumili Artists, which collectively represent more than 400 practising artists.
