Iconic western rock lobster brings Christmas joy to those in need

More than 1,000 homeless and disadvantaged Western Australians were today served WA’s iconic rock lobster as a Christmas gift from Kailis Bros and the McGowan Government.

For the first time, attendees of Mission Australia’s Christmas Lunch in the Park event tucked into the world-renowned WA seafood thanks to a donation from local seafood company Kailis Bros.

Earlier this month, the McGowan Government announced the Local Lobster Program to provide an extra 12,500 lobsters for the local seafood market over the festive period.

After being approached by the Minister for Fisheries about the initiative, Kailis Bros donated 750 wild caught western rock lobsters, which they cooked, prepared and delivered for the lunch.

Christmas Lunch in the Park has been enjoyed for more than 40 years by more than 60,000 of Perth’s community members experiencing marginalisation and disadvantage.

The State Government contributed $20,000 to today’s Christmas Lunch in the Park which was attended by Perth MLA John Carey, representing the Premier.
