‘David and Goliath’ battle for Perth’s cheapest fuel site for 2017

A small independent retail site has beaten other major retailers to take out the title of selling the cheapest petrol in the Perth metropolitan area for 2017.

The Chidlow Growers Mart and Liquor Store offered a yearly average price of 118.3 cents per litre (cpl) for unleaded petrol (ULP).

Following in second and third place, respectively, was FastFuel 24/7 in Forrestfield (119.6 cpl) and Puma Neerabup (121.1 cpl).

Only one major retailer, Caltex StarMart North Wanneroo, appeared in the top 10 for 2017.

The annual average price for ULP in 2017 was 128.2 cpl, much higher than last year’s average of 116.5 cpl.

This was due to rising international oil prices and the falling value of the Australian dollar, but is still relatively low compared to fuel prices over the past five years.

In 2017, the FuelWatch website was visited, on average, more than 800,000 times a month.

Motorists can save up to $780 a year by buying fuel at Perth’s cheapest sites each week.
