Tragedy prompts WA road rules booklets for international drivers

The State Government has today launched a series of road safety booklets in foreign languages in an effort to improve safety for international visitors who travel on our roads.

The booklets are available in seven different languages and include Western Australian road rules and key road safety messages.

The Italian Consul approached the Road Safety Commission (RSC) earlier this year after an Italian man was killed in a road crash on the South Western Highway near Balingup.

The French Consul and Claddagh Association of WA also reached out to the RSC to provide easily accessible road safety information for French and Irish nationals holidaying in WA.

The ‘On the Road’ booklets are available in seven languages:

  • Italian;
  • German;
  • Mandarin;
  • Malay;
  • Korean;
  • French; and
  • English.

Topics include driving on the left, safe overtaking practices, changing road conditions, long distances travelled and the danger posed by wildlife on the roads.

The booklets will be distributed widely across WA to a variety of drivers, from backpackers who purchase a vehicle for their trip to families hiring a vehicle.

The booklets are also available in a digital format and can be downloaded from websites including visitor centres, foreign consulates and the Road Safety Commission at http://www.rsc.wa.gov.au
