Housing Minister Peter Tinley today announced a major capital works and essential services package for the remote Aboriginal community of Tjuntjuntjara in Western Australia’s Great Victoria Desert.
Under the National Partnership on Remote Housing agreement between the State Government and the Commonwealth, $8.8 million is allocated to replace and refurbish 18 existing properties and to build four new homes to accommodate multi-generational families at Tjuntjuntjara.
A further $15 million will facilitate a significant redesign and upgrade of the community’s essential services infrastructure.
The infrastructure upgrades will boost the quality and quantity of drinking water as well as improve sewage treatment and wastewater use. An upgrade of the community’s power supply will improve distribution and retailing arrangements.
Last week, Pindan Pty Ltd was announced as the proponent for the first stage of works. Pindan has worked with the Department of Communities on urban renewal programs, new residential housing estates and remote housing projects over the past two decades.
Completion of work on the effluent and treatment systems is expected by the end of 2018.
Community Housing Limited provides the residents of Tjuntjuntjara – that due to its location, 690 kilometres north-east of Kalgoorlie, is one of Australia’s most remote Aboriginal communities – with property and management services under contract to the Department of Communities.
