The WA Government has delivered funding for a key Kalgoorlie election commitment to make Great Eastern Highway between Anzac Drive and Gatacre Drive a dual carriageway.
Premier Mark McGowan and Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan visited the stretch of road today to examine the scale of works proposed for the essential upgrade.
Forming the gateway to the Goldfields, the road is the only section within the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder that is not a dual carriageway.
The $14 million project will create about 100 jobs with design and engineering work, on the upgrades, currently underway with Main Roads Western Australia.
Construction is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2018-19 with the upgrades to be completed by June 2019.
Works will include improved drainage to carry water to an open channel and away from the highway via pipes beneath the road surface.
The upgrade will improve both safety and accessibility for about 8,000 vehicles that use this section of Great Eastern Highway every day, 15 per cent of these are heavy vehicles, some as long as 53.5 metres.
This funding is a key pillar of the Government’s Plan for the Goldfields, to create more regional job opportunities and make regional roads safer.
