A free family day will be held at the Subiaco Arts Centre this Sunday, November 5 to celebrate the organisation’s 60th anniversary.
Festivities will begin at 11am, with a picnic area, food trucks, ‘best of the fest’ short films for children from the Little Big Shots Film Festival, storytelling with Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company, face painting, an animal petting zoo, fairy floss, popcorn and more.
Showing throughout the day in the centre’s gallery will be an exhibition of photographs, historical items and memorabilia collected from the centre’s early history, with public contributions making up part of the collection.
From 6pm-8pm there will be entertainment from Western Australian artists VJ Zoo, with an outdoor light projection after sunset on the building, and live music from award-winning musicians Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse.
The centre first opened as the Subiaco Civic Hall in November 1957 and served as Subiaco Council Chambers. After conversion to a theatre in 1984, it was renamed the Subiaco Theatre Centre, becoming the Subiaco Arts Centre following a refurbishment in 2006.
The organisation has been home to many important companies in the State’s cultural history including the Hole in the Wall Theatre Company, Black Swan State Theatre Company, Barking Gecko Theatre Company, and currently Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company, Ochre Contemporary Dance Company and Tura New Music.
