Weekend of sport and community activities to honour memories of plane crash officers

Police Minister Michelle Roberts has paid her respects at the site of a plane crash which killed four Western Australia Police Force officers on Australia Day 2001.

Mrs Roberts and Commissioner of Police Chris Dawson joined families of the officers for a remembrance ceremony this morning at the crash site near Newman.

Senior Constables Donald Everett and Philip Ruland, First Class Constable David Dewar and Constable Gavin Capes were returning from the Aboriginal community of Kiwirrkurra when the plane’s engines failed.

The tragedy is the greatest loss of police life in a single incident in Australia’s history and had a profound impact on the community of Newman.

The Minister and Commissioner Dawson today joined locals at several community and sporting events in Newman, ahead of this evening’s main tribute match – The Bloody Slow Cup.

The rugby match between Australians and Kiwis has become one of Newman’s major sporting and social events and raises thousands of dollars for WA Police Legacy.
