WA Police Force and local artists team up to brush away graffiti

Police Minister Michelle Roberts has praised an initiative between police and TAFE students, targeting unsightly graffiti alongside the Kwinana Freeway.

The telecommunications huts in South Perth have been a known hotspot for graffiti vandalism over many years.

Despite rapid responses to clean up the graffiti, the infrastructure continues to be repeatedly targeted.

As part of a crime prevention strategy, officers from the WA Police Force’s Graffiti Team engaged local TAFE students to produce art murals which will be secured to the Telco Huts.

The group of students from South Metropolitan TAFE includes both mainstream students and an alternative program for youth at risk.

The project has received generous financial support from Telstra, Vodafone and Optus, while the City of South Perth has also contributed through clean-up of the site and application of an anti-graffiti coating to the artwork.

The Minister was delighted to present certificates of recognition to students as the artwork was installed at the South Perth site last week.
