Golden Gecko Awards finalists announced

Protection and rehabilitation is the focus of the five projects vying for the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety’s prestigious Golden Gecko Award for Environmental Excellence.

The variety of mining rehabilitation projects reflects the State’s different environments – from sand mining in the Swan Coastal Plain, to Banded Ironstone Ranges in the Mid-West and large scale iron ore mines in the Pilbara.

Western Australian miners are demonstrating there can be a balance between mining and nature through successful rehabilitation.

Three of this year’s entries have a rehabilitation focus, the other entries include a northern quoll protection program and a system that reduces the environmental impacts of exploration.

The Golden Gecko Awards celebrate innovation and leadership in environmental management in the resources sector.

The awards will be presented at the department’s annual Awards for Excellence night on Thursday October 26, along with the Community Partnership and the inaugural Safety and Health Resources Sector Awards.
