New move to strengthen government accountability in Aboriginal affairs

Western Australian’s are invited to provide feedback on a State Government proposal to create a new independent advocacy role for Aboriginal people.

A discussion paper released this week outlines two main roles for the position, including advocating for Aboriginal people’s interests in government policy and performance, and strengthening government’s accountability to Aboriginal Western Australians.

The Government is seeking input from the public, particularly from Aboriginal people, communities and organisations, prior to making any decisions on the proposal.

Submissions to the discussion paper will inform a model for the new position to be considered by the Government. If approved, legislation will be required to establish the position and provide it with statutory powers.

Submissions close on September 7, 2018, with the Government to also conduct a range of consultation activities with key groups over the coming months.
