Dragons compete on Champion Lakes

Five impressive dragon boats will draw large crowds to the 2018 Chung Wah Dragon Boat Festival at the Champion Lakes Regatta Centre this Sunday (June 3).

Organised by the Chung Wah Association, in partnership with Dragon Boating WA and the Australian Shanghai Federation, the family friendly event is expected to attract more than 1,000 people.

With the first race kicking off from 10.30am, the festival offers a variety of entertainment for all ages including cultural activities and food stalls, as well as a traditional eye dotting ceremony to bless the boats before the race begins. There will also be lion dancing and other cultural performances for spectators to enjoy.

Occurring on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar, the Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated by Chinese communities all over the world.

Dragon boat racing is a traditional Chinese sport that is believed to have originated in southern China over 2,500 years ago.
