Next steps in motion for landmark Kariyarra agreement

Lands Minister Rita Saffioti has now approved the transfer of two unallocated Crown land lots, as part of the historic Indigenous Land Use Agreement between the State and the Kariyarra people.

The transfer of this land – lots 258 and 259 – represents the beginning of the delivery of benefits to the local traditional owners.

The Indigenous Land Use Agreement ratified last year aims to empower the Kariyarra people by creating a range of opportunities, delivering practical benefits and facilitating economic self-determination. It also enshrines the recognition and protection of certain heritage sites.

The agreement, which followed many years of consultation and negotiation, was considered a major achievement and welcomed by the local community.
