Improving pathways to employment for people with disability

Disability Services Minister Stephen Dawson is today hosting a second roundtable discussion to improve pathways to employment for people with disability.

A range of key industry and business employers are coming together for the event, providing an opportunity to share their successes and how these may be enhanced and applied more broadly to improve long-term employment for people.

Discussion will focus around three key themes:

  • Business drivers for employment of people with disability;
  • Attraction and retention opportunities and challenges; and
  • Opportunities for innovation.

The first roundtable discussion was held in December 2017, with a focus on hearing and learning from people with disability employed in the public sector. Participants shared their experiences in the workforce, including challenges they faced and opportunities for career progression.

Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that nationally in 2015, about 53.4 per cent of working-age people with disability were participating in the labour force, compared to 83.2 per cent of those without disability.
