Grants chip in to potato industry growth

Four local growers and potato export and processing businesses based at Yarloop, Albany, Manjimup and Perth are set to receive funds under the Potato Industry Assistance Grants program.

The grants will support recipients to introduce 21st century technology, build new infrastructure and bring in custom-built equipment to grow their exports.

The projects include development of an export registered facility for fresh WA potatoes, a new washing and packaging line to supply ware potatoes to export markets, advanced imaging technology for sorting produce, and new steam peeling equipment to help make fries and wedges.

Target export markets include Singapore, Egypt and Mauritius.

The grants program was announced last year to support the industry to find new market opportunities following the incursion of tomato potato psyllid, which led to restricted access to markets in the Eastern States.
