Damning report highlights Carnarvon fascine failings

An independent assessment of the Royalties for Regions-funded Carnarvon fascine wall has found poor design, workmanship and maintenance have significantly reduced the lifespan of the fascine wall.

The fascine wall redevelopment, which along with surrounding works, cost taxpayers almost $20 million – has already suffered significant corrosion issues just years after its completion.

The MP Rogers & Associates review found that while the steel used was acceptable, the necessary corrosion protection measures were not taken for steel of that grade. It also found that concrete capping on the structure did not meet relevant Australian standards.

Without significant further maintenance, the lifespan of the fascine wall could be as short as five years, according to the report.

The report recommended further work be undertaken to gain a fuller understanding of the extent of the issue, and the State Government has agreed to fund two additional pieces of investigation.

The report follows the release of the Special Inquiry into Government Programs and Projects, which highlighted the chronic mismanagement of Royalties for Regions-funded projects by the former Government.
