Water polo championships a game of throws

The might of regional sport face-off in the pool at the 2018 WA Country Water Polo Championships, which start today at the Rockingham Aquatic Centre.

The event provides an opportunity for senior teams from across Western Australia’s country regions to compete at a higher level. They also have the chance to gain selection to represent the State at the National Country Championships to be held in Rockhampton in May, and potentially represent Australia at an international level.

The Peel Water Polo Club, which is hosting the event, competes in the WA metropolitan competition hosted by Water Polo Western Australia, and has been supporting the Peel region for 25 years.

The club aims to promote a healthy and active lifestyle through engaging in a team sport, and encouraging the development and interest in water polo within the region.

This year, the club is working to build a strong development program for juniors including school holiday program events, along with continued development of Flippa Ball (ages eight to 12) and Junior (ages 13 to 17) teams and competitions.

In 2017-18, Water Polo Western Australia received $120,000 through the Organisational Sustainability Program from the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries. They have also received $14,500 in coaching and officiating grants.

The competition runs until Sunday, March 4, with public spectators welcome.
