Draft code targeting FIFO mental health open for comment

Mines and Petroleum and Commerce and Industrial Relations Minister Bill Johnston has launched a draft code of practice to help promote and maintain the mental health of FIFO workers in the resources and construction sectors.

Developed by the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety, the Mentally healthy workplaces for fly-in fly-out workers in the resources and construction sectors code has been released for public comment.

It was created following recommendations from the Legislative Assembly Education and Health Standing Committee’s report on the impact of FIFO practices on workers’ mental health.

The draft code of practice uses a risk assessment process to identify potential psychosocial hazards and factors, and helps protect mental health in the workplace.

Western Australians have until Thursday April 19, 2018 to comment on the code.
