Other states encouraged to follow WA’s shark deterrent subsidy lead

A Federal Senate inquiry into shark mitigation and deterrent measures has recommended that other States should adopt the WA Government’s world-first shark deterrent subsidy.

The bipartisan committee who tabled the report in Federal Parliament yesterday, also recommended the phasing out of ‘lethal drum lines’ in place of ‘non-lethal shark mitigation and deterrent measures’.

The report recommends a number of other initiatives which the WA Government has already developed including:

  • A verification process for individual shark deterrent technology;
  • Engagement with stakeholders to develop effective real-time information alerts to beachgoers;
  • Research funding to scientifically investigate movements and behaviour of white sharks, and;
  • Development of acoustic detection systems and new deterrent mechanisms.
