Western Australia makes its case for GST reform

Treasurer Ben Wyatt has made the case for Western Australia to receive a bigger share of GST revenue at today’s Productivity Commission hearings on the GST system.

The Treasurer gave his support to a proposal from the Commission’s draft report to aim for ‘reasonable’, rather than ‘full’ equalisation, in particular, by equalising to the average fiscal capacity of all States and Territories, rather than the strongest State.

The Treasurer outlined practical pathways to reform, and put the onus on the Commonwealth Government to show leadership on this issue in order to achieve reform.

The details of the Western Australian Government’s position on these issues are included in its submission to the Commission, which can be accessed at http://www.treasury.wa.gov.au

The Commission will provide the Commonwealth Treasurer with its final report on January 31, 2018.
