One of the busiest areas at Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour has been transformed with the construction of a new multipurpose piazza in the heart of the popular restaurant precinct.
Officially opened yesterday by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti, the Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour Piazza provides a new gathering space for the 1.5 million visitors each year and additional alfresco dining areas that link surrounding restaurants.
The completion of the $1 million construction project delivers a key feature of the Department of Transport’s (DoT) landscaping master plan for the harbour which earlier this year was named Australia’s best public boat harbour at a national award ceremony.
The works, undertaken by Longreef Holdings Pty Ltd trading as Cicerello’s and Char Char Bull Restaurant and Bar on behalf of DoT, are further complemented by the ongoing upgrade and replacement of the harbour boardwalk.
Located between Cicerello’s, Kailis’ Fish Market Cafe and Bathers Beach House the new triangle shaped piazza activates an area previously used as a car park and maximises the space available to the public.
More than 50 local tradesmen worked on the construction project which saw extensive use of timber and coloured exposed aggregate concrete to limit future maintenance issues, also the use of reclaimed boardwalk timbers to create special seating.
