Leading US data centre provider opens fifth Australian centre

San Francisco-headquartered data centre provider, Digital Realty, announced construction has commenced on its new facility in Western Sydney.

The facility will create approximately 500 jobs during the construction phase and on completion, around 30 permanent jobs across facility management, engineering and security. The construction of the data centre, SYD11, is expected to take up to 12 months.

Once complete, the data centre will be a 14 megawatt site and span across 16,360 square metres. It will also connect with the existing SYD10 facility in Erskine Park aiming to offer local and international customers a well-connected, secure environment.

Australia is a key market for Digital Realty’s business. The firm’s CFO for Asia-Pacific, Krupal Raval, said the company is pleased to be expanding the footprint in Australia, adding to the four data centres they already run; two in Sydney and two in Melbourne.

‘In addition to demonstrating our commitment to our local customers, we hope this facility will become a hub for the modern economy, providing a significant boost in employment and additional investment in the area.’

Digital Realty provides a range of global data centre, colocation and interconnection solutions, with 145 sites across 33 metropolitan areas globally. In the Asia-Pacific region, it operates data centres in Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan.

Australia is one of the most developed and high-spending cloud markets in the world and is ranked sixth globally on the BSA cloud computing scorecard, ahead of the UK, Singapore and China.

Increased demand for cloud services is driving significant growth for more data centres across Australia. Frost and Sullivan forecasts that Australia’s data centre services market will grow at 12.4 per cent CAGR to 2022, and will reach over A$2 billion around the same time.
