The WA Government will fund more than 200 community sporting projects in 2017-18, through allocations ranging from $2,500 to $2 million, with a particular focus on junior and grassroots sport in the growing outer suburbs.
The Budget includes significant upgrades to sporting infrastructure, with key investments including:
- $6.92 million for development of the Centennial Park Sporting and Event Precinct to transform the sporting fields into a state-of-the-art regional sporting and event precinct;
- $5.75 million for the development of Albany Motorplex complex which will enable the community to host major motorsport events;
- $2 million towards the redevelopment of Morley Sport and Recreation Centre to meet growing demand; and
- $1.8 million to upgrade Gibson Park facilities in Bicton for the main pavilion extension, enclose the show courts and provide more seating for spectators.
Perth Stadium is the biggest of the 200 plus McGowan Labor Government sport and recreation projects creating jobs and building communities as part of the 2017-18 State Budget.
The $1.46 billion, 60,000 seat Perth Stadium, including the surrounding Stadium Park and its associated transport infrastructure, will be completed and delivered by the McGowan Labor Government. It is set to open in early 2018 – becoming the State’s premier sporting and entertainment facility. It will host a range of top-level international, national and domestic sporting events during 2017-18.
The sporting community will share in funding of $10 million towards participation and diversionary programs, high-performance initiatives, national events, sport integrity programs and support for grassroots sporting clubs.
Country areas will benefit from Royalties for Regions funding for quality sporting facilities that will help build sustainable communities and allow talented country athletes to develop in their home towns.
Programs focused on increasing childhood participation in sport and recreation, such as NaturePlay WA and KidSport, will continue to receive strong support from the McGowan Government.
The McGowan Government will continue to support key sport and recreation organisations such as the WA Sports Federation, Seniors Recreation Council, Royal Lifesaving Society, and Parks and Leisure Australia (WA) to help build mentally and physically healthy, socially connected communities.
