Mental health review launched

The Minister for Health and Mental Health has responded to the Interim Report of the Sustainable Health Review (SHR) and set up a review of the clinical governance of public mental health services. The review was recommended as a directive that required immediate action in the recent Interim Report of the SHR.

Professor Bryant Stokes AM has been asked to lead the important review; his experience equips him with a deep and unparalleled knowledge of the mental health system, and this review will build on the work of his 2012 Stokes Review.

This review is a recommendation of both Professor Hugo Mascie-Taylor’s Review of Safety and Quality in the WA health system and of the Sustainable Health Review interim report, and is critical to ensuring continued improvement in our mental health services.

As a consequence of his new role, Professor Stokes will step down as chairperson of the North Metropolitan Health Service Board on June 30, 2018.

The appointment of a new board chairperson will be announced in due course.

The clinical governance of public mental health services review is expected to take about six months to complete, and will help facilitate effective interaction between acute and community-based mental health services across the State.
