WA’s Commonwealth Games athletes welcomed home

Premier Mark McGowan and Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray have congratulated Western Australia’s returning Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games athletes – with an incredible 20 of 31 competitors returning home with medals.

WA’s returning champions will be congratulated by Mr Murray at the official homecoming event today at the State Reception Centre at Kings Park.

The Premier will attend a public welcome home event in Murray Street Mall later in the day.

Western Australian athletes brought home eight gold medals in athletics, basketball, track cycling, road cycling, hockey and swimming.

The State picked up five silver medals – in athletics, aquatics, boxing, hockey and netball – and five bronze medals in athletics and swimming.

Dual gold medallists Samuel Welsford (track cycling) and Madison de Rozario (athletics) each had a standout individual Games, while five Western Australians picked up gold medals as part of the all-conquering men’s hockey team.

Western Australia’s official medal count was 18, with team medals boosting the number of individual medallists to 20.
