Margaret River Pro showcases jewel in WA’s crown

Tens of thousands of spectators are expected to watch the 2018 Margaret River Pro at the world-class facilities at Surfers Point, and millions of viewers via global broadcasts, showcasing the stunning region to the world.

The Margaret River Pro forms part of the World Surf League (WSL) World Championship Tour (WCT), where the top ranked 34 male (plus two wildcard entries) and 17 female surfers (plus one wildcard entry) compete over a 12-day period.

Margaret River is one of 11 WCT events globally which occur at iconic destinations including Pipeline on the North Shore in Hawaii, Jeffreys Bay in South Africa and Teahupo’o in Tahiti.

The event, now in its 34th year, is a celebration of sun, surf, food and arts in an extraordinary natural environment, and will again offer three wave options for the competition – Mainbreak, The Box and North Point.

Competing surfers will include John John Florence, Filipe Toledo, Gabriel Medina, Joel Parkinson, Tyler Wright, Stephanie Gilmore, Sally Fitzgibbons and our very own newly named ‘WSL rookie of the year’ Bronte Macaulay.

Four years ago, the Margaret River Pro event was elevated to World Surf League’s World Championship Tour status, making it Western Australia’s only annual world championship event.

Last year’s Pro was considered the best in the event’s history, with about 35,000 spectators attending.

When the event’s five-year contract came to an end last year, there was speculation it may be dropped from the WCT but campaigning by the State Government and Surfing WA saw it secured for another two years.
