Perth and Peel at 3.5million plans the future

The State Government has released revised plans that assist to guide development across the Perth and Peel region.

The Perth and [email protected] frameworks aim to accommodate 3.5 million people by 2050 by creating vibrant communities within a compact and connected city; making best use of existing and proposed infrastructure; and protecting important environmental assets.

The four integrated land use and infrastructure planning frameworks – for the Central, North-West, North-East and South Metropolitan Peel sub-regions – also encourage greater housing diversity and choice to meet changing community needs and will limit unsustainable urban sprawl.

The plans support METRONET initiatives to connect suburbs, reduce chronic road congestion and focus on communities close to train station precincts.

About 800,000 new homes are needed for the increased population. Almost half – 380,000 at a minimum – will be provided through increased infill development, predominantly in existing suburbs and around key public transport locations.

The draft frameworks, released in 2015 for public consultation, received more than 1,100 submissions from landowners, State Government agencies, local governments and the development sector.

While a substantial volume of work underpins these documents, there is a need for further development of transport networks, including METRONET, and an increased focus on infrastructure-led planning.
