Let’s Clean Up Australia

Environment Minister Stephen Dawson has today urged Western Australians to give up a few hours of their day on 4 March to be part of the national clean-up day.

Clean Up Australia Day was started 28 years ago when Australian builder and yachtsman, Ian Kiernan instigated a clean-up in his own backyard – Sydney Harbour.

His simple idea has become the nation’s biggest community-based environmental event and since 1990, Australians have devoted more than 32 million hours cleaning up more than 344,000 tonnes of rubbish on Clean Up Australia Day.

Clean Up Australia has evolved into a recognised organisation – working with the community, government and business to help them operate more sustainably throughout the year.

In Western Australia, almost 400 sites have been registered for clean-up this Sunday, including parks, schools, beaches, sports ovals, skate parks, rural townsites, family centres and river foreshores.

If you are not free on Sunday, Keep Australia Beautiful’s Clean MarineAdopt-a-Spot and Clean Schools programs encourage ongoing community participation – keeping local streets, parks, beaches and river sites clean all year round.

To volunteer, go to the Clean Up Australia Day website and either join a registered site or create one of your own.
