Young Aboriginal athletes from all over the State will have a chance to show off their skills in three sporting carnivals over the next four days.
Today (2 March 2018), the 2018 Kirby Bentley Cup will be held at Lightning Park in Noranda.
The round robin competition for girls aged 13-15, is expected to have more than 10 teams and 150 players participating.
The annual Nicky Winmar Carnival for boys born in 2003, 2004 or 2005, will be held on Sunday (4 March 2018) at Bendigo Bank Stadium in Mandurah.
Both carnivals are designed for talented young players to put their skills on display, and provide an opportunity for them to be identified by WAFL or AFL clubs. The carnivals give these players the opportunity to develop their skills and are seen as legitimate pathways to State teams and squads.
Also to be held on Sunday is the 10th Aboriginal Youth Gala Day, one of Netball WA’s most important events. Held at Mandurah’s Rushton Park, Netball WA partner with the West Australian Football Commission to deliver the event on the same day as the Nicky Winmar Carnival.
Alongside spectators, more than 1,000 players, coaches and officials are expected to attend the three carnivals.
The Nicky Winmar Carnival and Kirby Bentley Cup are co-ordinated by the West Australian Football Commission and sponsored by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.
