Major Crash Investigators are seeking information regarding a fatal crash in Hovea yesterday afternoon, Thursday 8 February 2018.

The 16-year-old male driver of a red Nissan Pulsar sedan died as a result of injuries sustained in a single vehicle crash on Great Eastern Highway, Hovea.

The vehicle had been engaged in an Evade Police Incident prior to the crash. He was found deceased at the scene. Two other passengers in the Nissan Pulsar received serious injuries and had to be cut free from the wreckage.

Major Crash have carriage of the investigation which is being oversighted by the Internal Affairs Unit.

Preliminary information available is as follows.

The incident started about 5.30pm, when the Nissan Pulsar sedan came to the attention of a marked police vehicle while travelling on Altone Road, Lockridge. The driver did not respond to police attempts to stop the vehicle and the incident was immediately reported to the Police Operations Centre (POC). An Evade Police Incident was authorised but then terminated by the POC due to the dangerous manner of driving by the Nissan Pulsar.

Shortly afterwards, on approach to the intersection of Great Northern Highway and Reid Highway the Nissan Pulsar pushed through traffic and side swiped a Volkswagen Golf, causing minor damage to it. The female driver of that vehicle was not injured.

About 15 minutes after the vehicle was first sighted, it was again sighted, by an unmarked police vehicle, on Roe Highway on the approach to Morrison Road, before taking the exit ramp towards Great Eastern Highway. The police vehicle was authorised by the POC to engage the vehicle in an Evade Police Intercept.

The driver of the Nissan Pulsar again refused to stop and evaded a police deployed stinger on Great Eastern Highway.

Minutes later, due to the dangerous manner of driving the POC instructed that the Evade Police Incident be terminated.

Shortly after that the Nissan Pulsar left Great Eastern Highway in Hovea and crashed into a tree.

The driver of the Nissan Pulsar died at the crash scene. The two passengers were trapped inside the car wreckage and had to be cut free by Department of Fire and Emergency Services personnel.

The 18-year-old female passenger, whose condition was described as serious but stable, was transported by the RAC Rescue Helicopter to Royal Perth Hospital. The 16-year-old male passenger, who was freed after several hours, was taken by ambulance to Royal Perth Hospital. He is reported to have sustained serious leg and spinal injuries.
