With a strong commitment to addressing the rising number of Aboriginal children in care, the State Government has announced the successful $20 million tender to provide Aboriginal in-home support services.
A consortium of four Noongar Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs) has won the contract. The Wungening Aboriginal Corporation will be the lead agency with Ebenezer Home, Moorditj Koort and Coolabaroo Community Services also providing specialist services.
The Aboriginal in-home support services include:
- Guiding and mentoring parents on managing the day-to-day tasks in the home;
- Meeting the child’s needs and keeping the family safe together;
- Developing routines so parents regularly get their children to school;
- Addressing alcohol and drug issues, the impacts of intergenerational trauma, and homelessness; and
- Improving the family’s connection with their community and culture.
The Aboriginal In-home Support Service will be established in four locations in the metropolitan area – Mirrabooka/Joondalup, Cannington/Armadale, Perth/Midland and Fremantle/Rockingham.
