Optus Stadium and the surrounding Stadium Park was officially opened this morning when thousands of Western Australians were given the chance to tour the venue first, and for free, at the Community Open Day.
The opening ceremony was held this morning with Premier Mark McGowan, Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray and former Premier Colin Barnett opening the gates for the first time alongside juniors representing a range of sports.
About 15,000 fans streamed into the venue for the opening session, with seven more one-hour tours to take place into this evening and a total of up to 110,000 ticketholders to attend.
Attendees have the opportunity to roam the general admission areas, try the different food and beverage offerings, sit in the seats for the first time, and experience the stadium’s state-of-the-art lighting, video and audio systems.
In the surrounding Stadium Park, children have the opportunity to play on the six nature playgrounds located in the Chevron Parkland for the first time. The playgrounds cater for a range of ages and will be available to families free of charge on event and non-event days following today’s open day.
All ticketholders attending today are encouraged to utilise the free public transport included in their ticket today, with special event train and bus services running regularly throughout the day.
Members of the public who did not secure tickets to the open day are reminded tickets are still available for the AFL Women’s match between Fremantle and Collingwood on February 10, with tickets only $2, including free public transport.
Optus Stadium has awarded $130 million worth of contracts to local WA companies for the next five years, with 1,700 permanent and casual jobs created to support operations.
