Driver loses control in freeway tunnel as Main Roads works to remove rogue duck

Traffic Enforcement Group officers are investigating a crash that occurred just after midnight this morning, 19 January 2018 in the Graham Farmer Freeway tunnel.

Emergency workers were in the tunnel several hundred metres from the entrance in the right hand west bound lane. They were attempting to retrieve a duck that had entered the tunnel. As a result all lanes at the entrance to the tunnel indicated a 40 km/h speed zone and the emergency alert system was alerting drivers to the hazard ahead.

A Main Roads truck with crash barrier in place was stationary in the right lane and a tow truck was in front of the truck. The driver of the tow truck was in front of both stationary vehicles in the right hand roadway attempting to retrieve the duck.

The driver of a white Mitsubishi Lancer, believed to be travelling at speed, lost control of his vehicle slamming it into the left hand wall, careening out of control and narrowly missing the front of another vehicle in the centre lane before hitting the crash barrier of the Main Roads truck.

The male driver and female passenger both in their 20s, were taken by ambulance to Royal Perth Hospital with serious but non life threatening injuries.

Police would like to speak to the driver of a two door silver Nissan Skyline, possibly a 370Z model or similar that was also travelling in the tunnel at the time of the crash.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who saw the Mitsubishi Lancer or Nissan Skyline prior to the crash, is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a report online at www.crimestopperswa.com.au
