Public Amenity Enhancements for the East End

The City of Perth and State Government will join forces to improve pedestrian amenity in East Perth, implementing new infrastructure in support of the Matagarup Bridge.

This week, Council voted to accept increased funding from the Department of Transport, as part of the East Perth Walkability Enhancement Plan.

Deputy Lord Mayor Jemma Green said the construction of the new Perth Stadium and Matagarup Bridge has identified the need to upgrade surrounding amenities.

“The provision of $1.23 million by the Department of Transport will see the installation of new footpaths, kerb ramp crossings, bollards, lighting and CCTV,” Dr Green said.

“This will ensure safe, easy access and provide clear direction for people wanting to walk into East Perth from the new stadium.

“Collaboration between the City and State Government has helped to identify gaps, improve safety and expedite upgrades, by cutting red tape and providing the best outcomes for the community.”

Updated streetscapes will also surround the new Westin Hotel, with the City of Perth committing to work with developers to upgrade the site, to coincide with the hotel’s opening in March next year.

Enveloped by Murray Street, Irwin Street and Hay Street, the Westin Hotel is one of the most significant developments in the East End.

Town Planning Consultant Greg Rowe said the precinct will add vitality to area incorporating dining, retail, office and hotel accommodation.

“With the City Administration bringing forward plans for streetscape enhancements, footpaths and associated roadwork, the outcome is beneficial for both parties,” Mr Rowe said.

“It shows a great commitment by the City of Perth to work with private developers in the best interests of the community.”
