Students to tour Vietnam for war commemorations

Ten secondary students with a keen interest in world history have been selected for the Premier’s ANZAC Student Tour to Vietnam from April 16 to 26, 2018.

The students, accompanied by two teacher supervisors and a tour co-ordinator, will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Tet Offensive and the Battles of Coral and Balmoral from the Vietnam War.

Nearly 50 years ago, in late January 1968, Australian troops in Vietnam fought against a massive force during the Tet Offensive which struck during a ceasefire and festivities for lunar New Year.

Later that year, Australian soldiers fought in the deadly Battles of Coral and Balmoral.

This is the first time the Premier’s ANZAC Student Tour will journey to Vietnam.

The 2018 tour also marks the end of the Centenary of ANZAC 2014 to 2018 period of national commemoration.

Premier Mark McGowan will lead a variety of events to commemorate the end of the Centenary of ANZAC.

The Premier’s ANZAC Student Tour competition is open annually to all Western Australian students in Years 8 to 11 and students are selected following an essay competition and interviews.

The tour provides an opportunity for passionate young ambassadors to represent the State on a history and commemorative study tour overseas.
