Heath Ledger exhibition a tribute to local boy turned global star

A world-first exhibition about the life, work and extraordinary talent of Perth-born actor turned international movie star Heath Ledger opens at the Art Gallery of Western Australia this weekend.

Presented in partnership with the WA Museum, Heath Ledger: A Life in Pictures features objects and photographs from international collections and Ledger’s personal archives that reveal not only a charismatic star who played iconic movie roles, but a multi-talented individual who was driven to push creative boundaries.

Visitors will see for the first time the Joker and Nurse Hemming costumes from The Dark Knight (2008); the iconic shirts of Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist from Brokeback Mountain (2005); and Ledger’s Best Supporting Actor Oscar, BAFTA and other awards.

The exhibition will highlight his creative investigations into film and image making under the influences of visionary directors such as Ang Lee, Terry Gilliam and Todd Haynes.

Made possible through the generosity of the Ledger family and the executors of Heath Ledger’s estate, the exhibition is a fitting tribute to the actor who passed away 10 years ago next January.

Heath Ledger: A Life in Pictures is designed to encourage old fans and new audiences to discover a passionate film-maker, admire a screen legend and celebrate a local hero.

The free entry exhibition is expected to attract thousands of local, national and international visitors and will run from October 14, 2017 to January 29, 2018.
