Two men have been sentenced to two years imprisonment over the illegal importation of 40kg of performance enhancing drugs into Darwin International Airport.
The 40-year-old and 43-year-old, both from Sydney, pleaded guilty today in the Darwin Supreme Court to Possession of Schedule 2 drugs (commercial quantity) under the Northern Territory Misuse of Drugs Act and Import Tier 1 goods under the Customs Act 1901.
The pair arrived into Darwin on a flight from East Timor on 10 February 2016 and were questioned by Australian Border Force (ABF) officers. Their luggage was x-rayed and officers located 40 foil packages. Testing confirmed the packages contained a combined 39kg of testosterone enanthate and one kilogram of methandienone.
ABF A/g Commander Matt Stock said the sentence was a great result for ABF officers and investigators.
“These products are often cheap and easy to purchase overseas, but can have serious health impacts on users. This is a significant amount of potentially dangerous goods that we have stopped from reaching the community,” A/g Commander Stock said.
“This is just one of the many reasons our officers come to work every day– to stop these substances at the border and to prosecute the criminals who try to bring them into the country”.
