The WA Government’s State Budget has delivered a $780 million congestion-busting road and rail package for Perth’s northern suburbs, including the ‘jewel in the crown’, the Yanchep rail extension.
The Budget includes $440.8 million over four years to extend the Joondalup Line to Yanchep, as part of a $1.34 billion funding boost to start work on stage one METRONET priority projects.
As part of the WA Government’s record $2.7 billion investment in roads, the State Budget has enabled a number of important congestion-busting road projects to get underway in Perth’s northern suburbs, including:
- $40 million for widening of the Mitchell Freeway southbound between Cedric and Vincent streets;
- $50 million for a new traffic interchange at Wanneroo Road and Joondalup Drive;
- $65 million for a traffic interchange at Wanneroo and Ocean Reef roads;
- $31 million Wanneroo Road dual carriageway between Joondalup and Flynn drives;
- $70 million Reid Highway dual carriageway between Altone and West Swan roads;
- $60 million contribution towards the Stephenson Avenue extension project in Stirling; and
- $23 million contribution for the dual carriageway of Marmion Avenue to Yanchep.
As part of the WA Government’s record $129 million investment in cycling infrastructure, the Mitchell Freeway Principal Shared Path will be expanded to fill in gaps between Glendalough Station to Hutton Street; and Erindale Road to Civic Place.
As well as easing congestion for commuters in the northern suburbs, the delivery of these rail and road election commitments will create thousands of jobs for Western Australians.
METRONET will create thousands of jobs over the life of each project, including in the manufacturing industry as part of the $508.2 million commitment to develop WA’s own rail car manufacturing capability.
