WA Government kicks off Commonwealth Games appeal

More than 30 Western Australian Commonwealth Games hopefuls will come together today at the Western Australian Institute of Sport to launch their fundraising Team Appeal on the road to Gold Coast 2018.

Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray will join local sports stars – including Brianna Throssell, Tamsin Cook and Hockeyroos players – to kick-off the funding drive with a $60,000 contribution from the McGowan Government.

The 2018 Commonwealth Games will be held on the Gold Coast from April 4-15, with WA athletes and officials expected to make up a significant proportion of the final squad.

A total of 18 sports will be represented at the games, including triathlon, swimming, table tennis, netball, hockey, Rugby Sevens and weightlifting.

The Games will host the biggest integrated para-sport program in Commonwealth Games history with 38 events across seven sports, including lawn bowls, track cycling, triathlon and athletics.
