Minister inspects progress on Mackay’s Glenella Road upgrade

Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester was in Mackay today with Member for Dawson George Christensen to inspect work underway on an upgrade to Glenella Road in the city’s east.

Mr Chester said the Australian Government had committed over $2.52 million toward this project, under the Roads to Recovery program, which gives councils certainty when they need to upgrade and repair local roads.

“The Glenella Road upgrade near Jane’s Creek will involve resurfacing of the road and pavement rehabilitation to make it less prone to damage from flooding, installing off-road bike paths, and upgrading street lighting—improving safety in the major sporting area around the Magpies Sporting Club,” Mr Chester said.

“Other major projects being delivered in the Mackay region include the $497.3 million Mackay Ring Road project, with works to get underway next month.”

Member for Dawson George Christensen said he was pleased at the speed at which these upgrades had been completed, with Stage 1 already complete.

“The rapid progress of this project means works on Stage 2 can now get underway. We encourage motorists to be cautious while works continue on this important road upgrade,” Mr Christensen said.

Mayor of Mackay Regional Council Greg Williamson said Council was working with the Magpies Sporting Club to deliver the Glenella Road improvements as quickly as possible.

“We have collaborated closely with Magpies Sporting Club to ensure access to the busy local sporting facilities is maintained during construction, which is taking place during the AFL, soccer and league seasons,” Cr Williamson said.

Construction started in July 2017 and is due to take about two months to complete.

The Australian Government has committed $2,524,426 to the $3,224,571 Glenella Road upgrades, with Mackay Regional Council contributing the balance.
