A new bike boulevard in Bayswater has created safer and more efficient cycle links to local schools, train stations and businesses.
The first stage of Western Australia’s second bike boulevard is now complete, covering about 2.4 kilometres from the Swan River foreshore to just north-west of the Midland railway line in Bayswater.
The $969,000 bike boulevard runs along Leake and May streets, connecting to existing paths along the Midland Line and the Swan River.
Key elements of the project include:
- A new 30km/h speed limit with give-way slow points for a bicycle friendly zone;
- Connections to other bike routes, schools and parks; and
- Landscape enhancements to improve the overall look and feel of the street.
Future stages of the bike boulevard, including connections to the Bayswater and Morley town centres, are being investigated.
More information about the bike boulevard and the Safe Active Streets Program is available at the Department of Transport’s website
Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said “A cornerstone of METRONET is creating healthier, better connected communities and bike boulevards play an important role in this.
“Bayswater’s new bike boulevard provides safer connections to Bayswater Station, which will be an important connection as we roll out the METRONET line to Forrestfield and Ellenbrook.
“Building bike boulevards is also an attractive way to provide people with the infrastructure needed to cycle for short trips.
“By creating slower speed environments that connect to the wider cycling network, it encourages more people to give bike riding a go and helps to improve safety and connectivity.”
Maylands MLA Lisa Baker said “The quiet, leafy streets of Bayswater make it the perfect location for a bike boulevard.
“The new Bayswater bike boulevard connects St Columba’s and Bayswater primary schools, Riverside Gardens and local shops.
“The boulevard will help link people to Bayswater Station, as we investigate future works for the station as part of the METRONET upgrade.”
