Scholarships attracting world’s best mining talent to WA

The latest round of scholarships designed to attract the world’s best mining industry researchers to Western Australia were awarded yesterday (July 27) by Mines and Petroleum and Asian Engagement Minister Bill Johnston.

The Minerals Research Institute of WA (MRIWA) awarded three new PhD scholarships in its Education Program, which attracts diverse international talent to ensure the State remains at the forefront of mining research and technology.

Mines and Petroleum and Asian Engagement Minister Bill Johnston said “A goal of the McGowan Government is to make WA the go-to destination for clever, innovative mineral solutions, and to do that we need the best talent – both women and men.

“The new women’s scholarship is important for encouraging high-quality women into the industry, not only for their expertise, but to put them on pathways to future management roles.

“The international diversity of these scholars lays the foundations for strong relationships with the minerals industry in WA, particularly with our close neighbours in Asia.

“I congratulate the three recipients of these prestigious scholarships and thank the universities who have supported these students and their ongoing research.  This work is vital to WA’s continuing strength in the mining sector.”
