Protection and improvement of Western Australia’s world-renowned coastline will receive a $603,000 funding boost.
The State Government is providing funding towards 24 projects aimed at improving coastal amenity or addressing coastal hazards such as erosion and inundation.
The funding forms part of the 2017-18 Coastwest and Coastal Management Plan Assistance Program (CMPAP) and is provided to community groups, schools and local governments overseeing coastline projects.
Funds from Coastwest support projects that improve local coastal conditions and amenity, while CMPAP funding assists coastal land managers to undertake strategic planning.
Both grants are administered by the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage and support the Western Australian Planning Commission’s State Coastal Planning Policy.
The 24 funded projects span the State’s 20,000 kilometre coastline; from protecting the natural and cultural values of the remote Walsh Point in the Kimberley to planning for coastal hazards in Albany in the Great Southern.

Planning Minister Rita Saffioti said “WA is internationally recognised for its spectacular coast and these projects will help ensure it remains this way in the future.
“People throughout WA, many of them volunteers and students, are doing vital work to plan for and manage our coastline.
“The State Government is proud to provide the support and tools needed for each group to manage regionally specific issues, including developing coastal hazard risk management and adaptation plans, and rehabilitating dunes.
“The total value of these projects is nearly $1.86 million, with every dollar of Government funding being complemented by more than two dollars of cash, or in-kind contributions.”
